Hiking along the Waalweg paths

Surrounded by high mountain ranges, sunny South Tyrol has always battled against drought. As early as the 12th century, long channels were built for irrigation. These irrigation channels are still used to this day in parts. The paths along the channels, built originally for maintenance purposes, are now known as "Waalweg" paths.

Today, you can go on leisurely hikes along these paths throughout the year. Most of the paths are flat and can be walked along with normal shoes. The most famous is the Marling Waalweg. Over a total of 12 km, it leads from Töll to Oberlana. It is one of South Tyrol's longest Waalweg paths and is probably the most impressive. Five snack stations and inns invite you to stop for refreshments.

European region with the most castles

In the middle of Europe, South Tyrol is located almost right in the center of a very old cultural landscape, settled for as long as anyone can remember, and abounding with cultural heritage. From the Raeti and the Romans to the bards, scholars, and knights of the Middle Ages.

Castles, palaces, museums - let yourself be whisked away to earlier times. With over 150 castles, Appiano in South Tyrol is the European region with the most castles.

We are a dorado for passionated sportives: surfing at lake Caldaro, paragliding, rafting on the river Etsch, mountain biking, high ropes or horse riding – there are plenty choices to spend your time.
